How to Cut Exposure to BPA
BPA, or bisphenol A, is a chemical that has been used since the 1960's. It can be found in products such as:
- water bottles
- baby bottles and cups
- plastic toys
- coating in metal cans such as food cans
- baby formula cans
- bottle tops
- water supply lines
- dental sealants
- paper products such as cash register receipts
- paper money
- CD's
Studies show that this chemical has been linked to changes in the body such as:
- predisposition to heart and kidney disease
- endocrine disruption
- higher risk of cancer
- cardiovascular disese
- reproductive dysfunction
- neurological, brain and behavioral problems
- overweight issues
Children and babies are particularly sensitive to BPA. So, how can you cut exposure to this chemical that has even been found in dust particles in the home?
- If you feed your baby formula, opt for powder instead of caned formula because BPA that coats the cans leeches into the formula.
- Throw away any plastic food containers that have the number 7 on the bottom.
- Wash your hands after touching cash register receipts.
- Buy items packaged in glass or BPA-free plastic.

Evidence Shows Reiki Reduces Pain Intensity
In 2009 two researchers, Dr. Shamini Jain, from the UCLA Division of Cancer Prevention and Control Research, and Dr. Paul Mills, from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, and the Moores Comprehensive Cancer Center in San Diego, US, looked at 66 studies of biofield energy therapies, with Reiki being one type of biofield energy therapy. While they found most of the published works to be average or inconclusive in terms of efficacy results, they did find some strong evidence that these biofield therapies have positive effects on the human body.
They also concluded that there is a strong need for further high-quality studies of these biofield therapies. They add: "In order to better inform patients of the potential benefits or non-benefits of these biofield-based interventions, clinicians and scientists within behavioral medicine should familiarize themselves with current theory, practice and research of such techniques."
Here is the breakdown:
- strong evidence that biofield therapies reduce pain intensity in free living populations
- moderate evidence that biofield therapies are effective at lowering pain in hospitalized patients
- moderate evidence that biofield therapies are effective at lowering pain in patients with cancer
- moderate evidence that biofield therapies ease agitated behaviors in dementia
- moderate evidence that biofield therapies reduce anxiety in hospitalized patients
- inconclusive evidence for the efficacy of biofield therapies on symptoms of fatigue and quality of life in cancer patients
- inconclusive evidence for overall pain reduction and anxiety management in cardiovascular patients

Research Shows Kindness Meditation Helps You Love More
Barbara L. Fredrickson, Ph.D. is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who researched the emotion, and wrote a book about, love. In Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do and Become, Fredrickson's research demonstrates that when people practice a kindness based meditation every day for a few minutes, they experience more love in general in their lives.
One way to practice kindness based meditation is to sit quietly for a few minutes. Close your eyes and picture someone in your mind's eye. Think or say out loud, "May {person's name} feel safe. May they feel happy. May they feel healthy. May they live with ease."
This technique is simple and effective. It is also similar to the diamond heart Buddhist meditation practice. With this technique you sit with your eyes closed. Picture someone who needs love or support. Invite all their pain to enter into your heart. Picture your heart like a diamond, cold and glittering. See the pain and suffering melting away from the person as it is absorbed by the diamond. Send out love to them in return.
A third and similar visualization technique helps you to get along with almost anyone in your workplace, family, personal life etc. Look for an upcoming blog post about it soon!

Why You Should Eliminate "I Can't" from Your Language
I can't. Two simple words that are said all the time unconsciously.
- I can't afford that.
- I can't do that.
- I can't _____.
When you say "I can't" what you are doing is removing choice from your life and declaring to the Universe at large that you don't want opportunity to come your way. Research has also proven that we become what we think. If you are constantly thinking that you can't do ___ or have ___ or be ___, you are reinforcing this and creating it in your life.
For example, when I was in my early 20's and just starting out on my own, I had my first apartment in the city, a good job and a social life that was well balanced. But, I found myself saying, "I can't afford that," every time someone invited me out or I wanted to buy something for the apartment. Subconsciously I felt that my small, although steady, income was limited and I had to guard it closely. Each time I said, "I can't" the Universe heard, "Nope, don't send Laura opportunity." The Universe honors what we say, with complete neutrality. So, I had several years of believing that I didn't have enough financial resources. It took me a long time to realize that I had created a negative mantra that I repeated over and over! Only when I said, "Thanks, maybe next time," instead of "I can't," did my financial situation stabilize, both financially and emotionally. When I shifted my perspective about money to view it as flowing through my life instead of hoarding it in a lump sum, I gave myself permission to spend it on fun things that enriched my life as well as the bills and it stopped being a negative bone of contention.
You are always in control of the choices you make in your life.
You are always in control of the choices you make in your life.
Think about when you say, "I can't." While it may be true that outside circumstances prevent you in that moment from accomplishing whatever it is you are saying no to, there is a way to decline in the moment while still keeping the door open for, "I can" to flow in your life the next time.
Instead of saying, "I can't," try saying instead:
- I would love to buy that and someday I will be able to.
- I would love to attend and next time I may be able to.
- I would like to _____ and there will be a time when I can.
- I choose not to _____ because _____.
What other positive mantras can you think of that emphasize, "I can"? Please share them in the comments here. When you use, "I can" instead of "I can't" you are telling the Universe to keep the door of potential open for you! You are reinforcing positive energy thoughts that flow through your life, helping to create a life full of potential, not limitation.
